Arafat Appointed Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and Professional Development

Hwyda A. Arafat, MD, PhD, MSc. MEdL, has been appointed director of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and Professional Development effective September 1, 2024.

Hwyda A. Arafat, MD, PhD, MSc, MEdLDr. Arafat is a professor in the Department of Medicine and the director of the Pathophysiology and Clinical Medicine thread for the MD program at the College of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in clinical pathology at Ain Shams University Hospitals in Cairo, Egypt. She received a master’s degree in pathology and biochemistry and her PhD in cell biology and immunology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

She completed her postdoctoral training, first at Temple University, then at the University of Pennsylvania. As faculty at the Thomas Jefferson Sydney Kimmel Medical College, Dr. Arafat had a successful teaching and research career in the areas of pancreatic cancer and diabetes mellitus. She joined the faculty at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine as a clinical professor and obtained a master's degree in medical education leadership there.

Throughout her career, Dr. Arafat has been a trusted mentor to medical and graduate students. In this expanded role to her current teaching obligations, she will work in collaboration with postdocs, faculty, administrators and external entities to support our culture of enhanced personal growth and professional development to benefit teaching, scholarship and innovation at Drexel University and the global scientific community.
