Walter Harris, MD, Named Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology

Walter Harris, MD, has been named Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, effective May 1. Dr. Harris will join Drexel University College of Medicine from his private practice, Rittenhouse Eye Associates, which he founded in 1989. He has served as an affiliate member of the College of Medicine faculty for nearly 30 years. Additionally, he is a staff physician at several local hospitals, including Hahnemann University Hospital and Wills Eye Hospital.
A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Harris completed his internship in internal medicine at Hahnemann and his residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia. He is certified in LASIK surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and The College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
Dr. Harris developed and teaches the curriculum for the ophthalmology anterior surgery lecture series and wet lab/surgical series for Hahnemann ophthalmology residents. He has served as supervising attending and proctoring surgeon at Rittenhouse Eye Associates for residents on clinical rotation from Drexel Eye Physicians and has served in the same capacity for residents at Wills Eye. He is a member of the Continuing Education Committee for Ophthalmology at Drexel University College of Medicine.
