Student Research Day a Success!

The second annual Medical Student Research Day held on Wednesday, March 20, was a big success. There was a four-way tie for first place and a four-way tie for second place. In all, 57 abstracts were submitted, including 15 from MD/PhD students.
First Place

Mentor: Vatinee Bunya, MD, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
Second Place
The second place winners were: Emily Greenwald, Sapan Ghandi, Eric Sarkissian and Gregory Piech. During the event, Piech was also formally recognized as a Medical Student Research Scholar, which has allowed him to take a year off of medical school to conduct research.
Keynote Address
The keynote speaker was Mahendra Rao, MD, PhD, director of the National Institutes of Health Center for Regenerative Medicine and internationally renowned for his research involving human embryonic stem cells and other somatic stem cells. He gave a history of stem cell research and spoke about the potential future applications of stem cells in the treatment of disease.
