FOCUS on Success
The Master of Science in Medical Science (MMS) program is a rigorous, two-year degree program that couples a challenging and rich curriculum with engaged and personalized student advisement. The program is designed to provide talented students interested in applying to medical school both medical knowledge and research competencies. The first and second years of study focus on honing specific skill sets. This sequence allows students to develop strong, well-rounded academic portfolios and become competitive candidates for seats in medical school.
Year 1: FOCUS on Academics
During the first year, students build academic skills and enhance their credentials. Through a rigorous program, students demonstrate they are ready to succeed.
Medical Science program students take one year of rigorous graduate biomedical coursework presented by a talented faculty. The curriculum is comparable to coursework taken during the first year of medical school and provides an opportunity for direct assessment of a student's readiness for medical school. Students who take the full Medical Science program curriculum and meet specific criteria are guaranteed an interview at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Year 2: FOCUS on Research
During the second year, students work with leading scientists and clinicians doing cutting edge research while strategically preparing for the application process.
The second year of the Medical Science program provides students with unique and rich research experience. Students work in leading laboratories around Philadelphia, mentored by some of the top scientists in our city. This opportunity allows students to not only engage in meaningful research and ask important questions with real-world applications, it also allows our gifted students the chance to hone their critical thinking skills, learn how basic scientists and clinical researchers analyze and communicate their findings, and to begin networking and developing professional relationships. Over the course of the second year, students participate in a Research Seminar where they present and discuss their research, write papers and present a final poster to the community. While the Medical Science program is not a thesis-based research Master's, many students do publish abstracts or journal articles in peer-reviewed papers as well as present posters at local conferences.
Admission to the MD Program
A number of academically excellent pre-medical and pre-health program graduate students are interviewed each year for admission to the Drexel University College of Medicine MD program. The MD program enrolls a strong cohort of students from the Interdepartmental Medical Science (IMS), Master of Science in Biological Science (MBS) and Master of Science in Medical Science (MMS) programs. For the past several years IMS, MBS and MMS graduates comprised about ten percent of the entering MD class.
