Technology Use
July 16, 2014

As new academic research initiatives become increasingly interdisciplinary, it is imperative that science and engineering librarians develop and implement new approaches to the dissemination of library research tools and techniques. At Drexel University, several such initiatives have resulted in the state of the art interdisciplinary research in areas such as biology, engineering and medicine. Many of these research projects may lead to inventions and therefore increased patent applications. In alignment with the Technology Use Drexel Student Learning Priority, this hands-on workshop will introduce you to advanced techniques and tools for searching patents using case studies from these groundbreaking research developments. You will learn how to use the U.S. and international patent classification systems to improve your search results and explore new online tools for keeping up to date with emerging technologies.

Learning objectives include:

  • Develop awareness of current interdisciplinary research and potential for innovation.
  • Create account in databases to receive alerts on current research. Monitor alerts.
  • Understand basics of patent searching.
  • Use patent classification system for efficient searching.
  • Apply patent searching skills in individual projects and/or senior projects and/or collaborative research projects when required.
