Students of University College Cork (UCC) are to take part in the first virtual global classroom with fellow Masters students of Drexel University Philadelphia in the US.

UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and the School of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University Philadelphia will partake in the global classroom which will take place over two weeks.

The virtual global classroom allows students to explore how global health concerns go beyond borders and how discourse on certain health issues benefit from international collaboration and learning.

Students have this week begun engagements with one another ahead of the two-week-long global classroom beginning on April 12 by sharing different experiences from the perspectives of two different health systems on the handling of the Covid-19 emergency.

The global classroom was developed to equip students with a framework to exchange knowledge and develop transcultural competence on issues common to most countries and will address two global healthcare issues for advanced practice nurses, palliative care and addiction.

Experts in both fields from Ireland and the USA will present in these subjects in the virtual learning environment and online discussion will be facilitated among the students and experts.

This project, a collaboration between Dr. Patrick Cotter of UCC and Ms. Cheryl Mele and Dr. Theresa Campo of Drexel University, brings together clinical and academic experts in the areas of addiction and palliative care from both sides of the Atlantic.

The global classroom will take place over the course of two weeks from April 12.
