Sabrina Chue

Sabrina Chue, Information Systems ‘20

Study Abroad in Seoul, South Korea

Sabrina Chue is a junior majoring in Information Systems. She received the Gilman Scholarship for her study abroad experience in Seoul, South Korea at Hanyang University during Spring 2019. She chose to study abroad in South Korea because for as long as she could remember, she was fascinated with all things Korean, from food, music, fashion, and culture. She always dreamed about getting the chance to immerse herself in the Korean lifestyle first hand.

She hopes to develop more independence and to come out of her shell to become a better version of herself. She also hopes to become more well-versed in the Korean language, culture, and traditions as she spends her free-time traveling around different parts of Korea.

This experience will help open her eyes to different cultures, other than the Korean culture, but the cultures of those she meets who are also participating in the exchange program. In addition, she hopes this experience will help her personal growth. She looks forward to meeting new people from all over the world and challenging herself to make new friends to explore Korea with and create fascinating and everlasting memories.

Brianna LaBarge

Brianna LaBarge, Nursing ‘20

Study Abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica

Brianna LaBarge is a fourth year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received the Gilman Scholarship for her study abroad experience in San Jose, Costa Rica in the Healthcare in Latin America program during Winter 2019. She wanted to study abroad in Costa Rica to experience a different healthcare system and to further her Spanish speaking skills.

She hopes to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the Costa Rican culture and be able to use her Spanish skills in the medical field. She hopes that this experience will impact her positively in many ways because she is achieving her goals of immersing herself in another culture and to do challenging tasks/activities in a language that is not native to her. She looks forward to being able to live with a host family and completely submerge myself into the Costa Rican culture.

She has a blog that she is writing to help her fulfill the Gilman Scholarship Project proposal. She is very proud of her blog and would love to reach more students to give insight to her experience.
