Dine & Discover: South Korea
February 22, 2018
Thirty students were transported to Seorabol, a South Korean restaurant in Olney, for the inaugural Dine & Discover event on February 21. In a new collaboration between the Office of International Programs and International Scholars and Students Services, the Dine & Discover series encourages domestic and international students to share a meal, family-style. Besides meeting new people and trying new foods, students have the opportunity to learn some specifics about the country's food and dining etiquette. The first installment of this series featured Sunmi Oh, a Korean language professor at Drexel, who spoke about the proper way to use chopsticks, the culture of how to eat and drink politely in South Korea, and helped students understand the nine Korean dishes served. Students are provided with discussion questions, which encourage them to discuss their own cultural backgrounds and intercultural experiences. To top it all off, Geon Yeop Kim, Drexel alumnus and manager of H Mart in Elkins Park, kindly provided each student with a goodie bag full of South Korean snacks.
