In an effort to further work focused on increasing understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of biostatistics among a far more diverse range of students and scholars, Loni Philip Tabb, PhD, a professor in Dornsife's department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, presented "Exploring the Geography of Health in the US: The Impact of Health Factors and County-Level Demographics; Biostatistics, Data Science & More," at E&O: Diversity in Data Science and Machine Learning Conference, October 2019, at Howard University.

The conference brought together a group of undergraduates, academics, government and industry experts on data science. The goal was to expose undergraduate students and participants to the various aspects of data science and its impact across industries and discuss the impact of diversity of all kinds on the field of artificial intelligence and data science. Students had an opportunity to explore these important issues with data science experts and to participate in professional development activities for students interested in graduate school.

The event was co-sponsored by four, historically black colleges and universities — Howard University, Spelman College, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, in partnership with The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI), a partnership of Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
