Dornsife Celebrates National Public Health Week

National Public Health Week - April 1-5, 2019 - workshops, giveaways, food and friends

March 19, 2019

Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health is observing National Public Health Week from Monday, April 1 through Friday, April 5, 2019.

National Public Health Week (NPHW), created by the American Public Health Association (APHA), celebrates public health’s successes and highlights new approaches to solving our most pressing challenges from organizations across the country. This year’s theme, “Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health,” spreads the message that we all have a responsibility to the health of our community and our country.

Join us and our partners, here at Dornsife and in the community, at any one of our NPHW events to help create a healthier Philadelphia. You can also help us get the word out on social media by helping us share important research linked to each day’s theme.

We will acknowledge the hard and important work already being done, look to the future and see what we can accomplish together. Throughout the week, we will amplify critical, diverse, cross-sector partnerships that can only lead us closer to becoming the healthiest nation.

Sock and Soap Collection for Hub of Hope

All week in the Nesbitt Hall lobby Dornsife is partnering with Hub of Hope to do a sock and soap drive to give back to the community.

The new Hub of Hope offers a safe place where people can enjoy a warm cup of coffee, take a shower and wash laundry, and speak to peers or case managers to begin the process of finding a permanent home. The program is a partnership between the City of Philadelphia, SEPTA, and Project HOME.

APHA A Billion Steps Challenge: Bike/Walk to Work Day

APHA’s Billion Steps Challenge makes it easy and fun to promote good health and physical activity in your community.

The #APHABillionSteps Challenge supports broader health promotion efforts and the intersections between community design and active living, such as 2015’s "Step It Up: The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities." We hope you’ll join us in advocating for programs and opportunities for all people to engage in physical activity in their communities.

Social Cohesion: How Philadelphia Health Data Inspired a Yale/Drexel Collaboration

The Dornsife and Yale Schools of Public Health are pleased to bring you an evening of “social cohesion.”

Yusuf Ransome, PhD, assistant professor, Yale School of Public Health, and Harrison Quick, PhD, assistant professor, Dornsife School of Public Health, will discuss the concept of social cohesion and the collaborative partnership between the universities. With opening remarks from Dean Ana Diez Roux, MD, PhD, and Dean Sten H. Vermund, MD, PhD. Reception to follow.

Take Back the Night

Honor Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and National Public Health Week by participating in the Drexel Office of Equality and Diversity's annual walk against domestic violence at 6 p.m. on Locust Walk.

Physical and sexual violence affect both men and women and can affect students, faculty, and staff right here within the Drexel University community. While violence can present itself in the form of an attack by a stranger, most acts of violence are committed by people we know and all too often are committed by those who are closest to us.
