Drexel Report Offers Opportunities for Hospital-based Violence Prevention Programs Under Affordable Care Act September 2, 2015 A new report in Annals of Internal Medicine co-authored by members of Drexel University’s Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice describes effective strategies to increase adoption of evidence-supported violence prevention programs in hospitals. The article also describes some opportunities to enhance program sustainability resulting from the Affordable Care Act. Physicians' commitment to addressing violence is growing, as research notes that violently injured patients are at high risk for violent reinjury, violence perpetration, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress. "Although more research is needed about the effectiveness of hospital-based violence intervention programs, they offer an evidence-supported model that hospitals can adopt to prevent violent reinjury, reduce health costs, and modernize the standard of care for violently injured patients,” the authors report.
