Remembering Robert Immordino, Department of Mathematics
November 19, 2019
On November 8, 2019, Robert Immordino, MS, associate teaching professor in the Department of Mathematics, passed away following a several-year battle with lung cancer.
Immordino was a beloved teacher and colleague, and a dedicated member of the College of Arts and Sciences community. A lifelong Dragon, he graduated from Drexel University with a BS in Chemical Engineering and joined the Drexel Department of Mathematics in 2004, going on to earn an MS in Finance from Drexel in 2007.
As an associate teaching professor of mathematics, he coordinated the freshman calculus and freshman math sequences, and designed and taught a math course for non-native English speakers. He was also active in the University’s events and recruitment initiatives and volunteered his time at the College’s Commencement ceremony, Raft Debate and Open Houses.
A man of many talents and interests, Immordino spent the year following his undergraduate degree teaching English at the Beijing Institute of Machinery in China, where he organized an English corner for students of any major to practice their English-speaking skills. His hobbies included carpentry, hang gliding, skiing, hiking, sailing and golfing.
His family says, “Everything Bob did, he did with passion and a drive for excellence. He was an avid skier, hang glider and sailor. He brought the same qualities to his teaching. Bob had a love and zest for life and for those he shared it with.”
Immordino will be deeply missed by his students and colleagues, who remember him for his kind heart and passion for education.
“Robert was an extremely energetic person and tireless educator. He always handled student concerns in a thoughtful and serious way, and never hesitated to pitch in and help his colleagues. He will be deeply missed,” says Shari Moskow, PhD, head of the mathematics department.
His loss will be felt by all of those who worked closely with him.
