We are pleased to recognize the recent grants, publications, presentations, awards and honors of the members of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Awards & Honors
WELL Center PhD student Christina Chwyl received the Society of Behavioral Medicine Excellence in Research Award.
Brenda Dyer, associate teaching professor of French, has been promoted to teaching professor of French, effective September 1, 2022.
Adrienne Juarascio, PhD, assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences, was elected president of the Eating Disorder Research Society.
Grants
Adrienne Juarascio, PhD, assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences, received an award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to conduct a project titled “CBT+: Optimizing digital health technologies to improve therapeutic skill use and acquisition.”
Elizabeth Watson, PhD, associate professor of biodiversity, earth and environmental science, was an awardee of Drexel University’s Environmental Collaboratory’s Inaugural Research Grant. Watson’s project “Developing a Community-Led Research Project in Collaboration with ENLACE, San Juan, Puerto Rico” will analyze geospatial flood data and engage undergraduates in participatory research to build climate-resilient communities. Project partners include ENLACE and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Publications
A Legacy to Share, the book produced by Drexel Publishing Group with the Drexel University Black Alumni Council (DUBAC), received silver and bronze awards from CASE (The Council for Advancement and Support of Education). A Legacy to Share contains the personal and professional stories of more than 50 Black Drexel alumni.
Altine “Jojo” Elhassan published a short story, “Border Control,” in The Newlyweds’ Window, an anthology of African Writing from Mukana Press. Elhassan is an incoming student in the MFA program and the first recipient of the MFA Special Gift Fund Scholarship.
Tim Fitts, adjunct assistant professor of English, published two short stories. "Flies" appears in the current issue of the Evening Street Press, and "Chimpanzee" appears in the latest issue of The Penn Review. Fitts also has a solo photography exhibition in Changwon, South Korea, running through the month of July.
Alison Kenner, PhD, associate professor of politics, published an article, “What is energy literacy? Responding to vulnerability in Philadelphia's energy ecologies,” in Energy Research & Social Science with CoAS students (now alumni) Briana Leone, Andrew Rosenthal and Morgan Sarao.
Nada Matta, PhD, assistant professor of global studies and sociology, published an article, “Middle-Class Employees in the Egyptian Uprising of 2011,” in Critical Historical Studies.
Global studies major Kejsi Ruka published an article in the newsletter of the Sociologists for Women in Society called “SWS Student Members Spotlight: Bringing My Research To the World With SWS.”
Scott Warnock, PhD, professor of English, as a member of the Online Writing Instruction Standing Group for the Conference on College Composition and Communication, co-authored their report “The 2021 State of the Art of OWI Report.”
WELL Center graduate students Christina Chwyl and Emily Presseller and research coordinator Olivia Horgan each published .
Chwyl published “Beyond Calorie Tracking: A Pilot Trial of a Remotely Delivered Behavioral Weight Loss Intervention Using an Ad Libitum Plant-Based Diet” in JMIR Formative Research, and “An Ecological Momentary Assessment Investigation of Emotion Differentiation in Individuals with Loss of Control Eating” in the Journal of Emotion and Psychopathology.
Presseller published “Sensor technology in eating disorders research: A systematic review” and “Self-regulation deficits moderate treatment outcomes in a clinical trial evaluating just-in-time adaptive interventions as an augmentation to CBT for bulimia-spectrum eating disorders” in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, and “Latent trajectories of symptom change during cognitive-behavior therapy predict post-treatment worsening of symptoms: A preliminary examination among outpatients with bulimia-spectrum eating disorders” in Eating and Weight Disorders.
Horgan published “Optimizing an mHealth intervention to change food purchasing behaviors for cancer prevention: Protocol for a pilot randomized control trial” in JMIR Research Protocols.
Presentations
Lisa DiMaio, EdD, teaching professor of English, will preset her paper “Negotiating Difference: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Writing Center Interactions between Peer Tutors and Multilingual Tutees” at the International Writing Centers Association conference in October.
Physics PhD student Prakash Gautam presented an "Overview of nEXO neutrinoless double beta decay experiment" at the XV International Conference on Interconnections between Particle Physics and Cosmology, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, on June 7.
Physics PhD student Shashank Jayakumar gave a poster presentation on "The PROSPECT Detector Upgrade" at the XXX International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics on May 31.
Michael S. Vogeley, PhD, professor of physics, presented an invited review at the annual meeting of the European Astronomical Society in Valencia, Spain. His talk entitled “Cosmic Voids: Past, Present, and Future” opened the special session “Voids: Cosmology, Cosmic Web and Void Galaxies.”
