CCI Research Professor Larry Alexander Named Site Director of NSF Center for Visual & Decision Informatics

Drexel University and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s (UL Lafayette) National Science Foundation Center for Visual & Decision Informatics (CVDI) has selected College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) Research Professor Larry Alexander, PhD as Drexel University’s site director. Alexander will succeed CCI Associate Professor David E. Breen, PhD who had served as Drexel’s site director and CVDI’s deputy director the last year.

Alexander’s primary research interests include large-scale modeling and simulation, pattern recognition, and the future of information technology. Prior to joining CCI, Alexander served as the director of advanced technology for Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems and Global Services, where he led research and development in advanced information systems technology. Most recently, he directed a 500-person technology portfolio focused on the development of new products and services for the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, NASA and the Civil Government Market Place.

Alexander earned a doctorate degree in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, a master of science degree in electrical engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from RPI. In 2008, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Eastern Technology Council of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The Center—one of 20 active I/UCRC Information, Communication and Computing programs in the U.S.— serves as a virtual enterprise between UL Lafayette’s School of Computing and Informatics and College of Computing & Informatics. CVDI is funded by the I/UCRC program of the NSF, members from industry and government, and university matching funds.

CVDI is dedicated to driving continuous innovation through knowledge sharing among partners leading to invention and commercialization of decision support technologies, by bringing together analytic, visual and perceptual techniques to enhance industry competitiveness within commercial ecosystems such as: information and publishing, healthcare, oil and gas, manufacturing, disaster management, revenue and finance, business process intelligence, e-science, real-time supply chain monitoring/visualization and network analysis.
