Over 70 people—including participants from industry, Drexel University alumni and researchers, faculty, professional staff and students from both Drexel and area institutions—joined in celebration of the launch of College of Computing & Informatics’ (CCI) Metadata Research Center (<MRC>) on Thursday, April 2. The event kicked off with a welcome from Alice B. Kroeger Professor and <MRC> Director,
Jane Greenberg, PhD. CCI Dean
David Fenske, PhD set the stage by highlighting significant challenges in today’s data intensive environment, noting
The 4th Paradigm: Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery (Microsoft Research, 2009)—a collection of essays expanding on the vision of pioneering computer scientist Jim Grey. The event followed with a series of lightning talks highlighting current metadata research and a “shout-it-out” session— offering attendees the chance to present their research ideas in an informal way. The event concluded with a lively reception in the MRC’s lab in the Rush Building on Drexel’s University City Campus.

Greenberg has recently presented <MRC>’s work and vision at several area conferences. At a March 24 conference organized by CENDI, an interagency working group of senior scientific and technical information (STI) managers from
14 U.S. federal agencies, Greenberg presented on the increasing need for data scientists to address big data challenges, and how to prepare the information professionals for the future.
She also served as keynote speaker at a March 31
Metadata Madness East conference, presented by the
Media & Entertainment Services Alliance, which provided professionals from a diverse range of areas in the entertainment field (including production technology, marketing, digital media, finance, business intelligence, etc.) the opportunity to examine the ways they define and align fields of data to help automate their processes for movies and television.

About the Metadata Research Center
CCI's Metadata Research Center (<MRC>) advances research in metadata, semantics and ontologies. Current <MRC> research initiatives target digital data, data-at-risk and knowledge organization via leadership and engagement in
Dryad, two HIVE DataNet Federation Consortium collaborations, the
DCMI Science & Metadata Community, the
DataONE/Preservation & Metadata Working Group and the
CODATA/Data-at-Risk Working Group.
<MRC>'s information environs introduce issues requiring rigorous investigation of metadata generation techniques, applications, knowledge organization systems, linked data, standards and more. The <MRC> leads and participates in research addressing significant questions and discovering metadata solutions for today's most pressing information management challenges.
