Drexel’s Applied Informatics Group Selects Alan E. Bynum as Strategic Development Executive

Drexel University’s translational research center, the Applied Informatics Group (AIG), has selected information operations and cyberspace policy expert Alan E. Bynum as strategic development executive and assistant research professor through a one-year appointment to lead on-site development efforts with Federal Government customers, effective September 1, 2014.

Bynum currently serves on the board of directors as regional director for information operations at the Association of Old Crows, a not-for-profit international professional association with over 13,000 members and over 200 organizations engaged in the science and practice of Electronic Warfare (EW), Information Operations (IO) and related disciplines headquartered in Alexandria, Va.

Bynum, who is based in Drexel University’s Washington, D.C. Office, will focus on identifying opportunities and lead capture processes in support of AIG and CCI; Drexel’s National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Visual and Decision Informatics (CVDI); and associated University institutes. Bynum will also provide guidance to University researchers and faculty regarding business development opportunities, grants and contracts; and will help to promote and recruit students for Drexel courses, especially those tailored for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Federal agencies.

Bynum brings to Drexel years of senior executive experience in government and industry, where he developed and implemented successful business strategies through creative approaches, initiative and innovation, and brought those opportunities to market. He currently serves as an executive board member active in professional business forums focused on advocacy for national defense centers of excellence devoted to improving U.S. Government viability and capabilities.

In addition to DoD executive training at the Naval War College and Air Force Command and Staff College, Bynum earned a master of arts in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College; a master of arts and science in aeronautical science technology from the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; and a bachelor of arts in psychology from the University of Hawaii.

AIG bridges the gap between basic research and real-world applications and provides Drexel researchers a world-class advantage in transitioning their leading edge research to industry and government stakeholders. Their faculty and professional staff provide subject matter expertise in knowledge representation, mobile computing, machine learning, robotics, modeling and simulation, advanced imaging, human centered computing, cyber operations and information sciences; as a group they specialize in extending university research into developmental programs for industry and government solutions.
