American Library Association Grants Drexel CCI Continued Accreditation for Master’s in Library and Information Science Program

February 27, 2018

Drexel University College of Computing & Informatics’ (CCI) Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MSLIS) program was granted Continued Accreditation Status until 2024 by the American Library Association’s (ALA) Committee on Accreditation.

Founded in 1892, CCI’s program is one of the oldest continuously operating LIS programs in the United States, and has been ALA-accredited since 1924.

The MSLIS program’s accreditation indicates that the College has demonstrated a commitment to quality and seeks to continue that commitment.

The program was revised in 2017 to provide an in-depth overview of the contemporary theory and practice of information management, organization and stewardship within information organizations.

“Our re-accreditation marks the continuation of Drexel’s longstanding tradition of excellence in the LIS field,” said MSLIS Program Director and Professor Denise Agosto, PhD. “We are proud to offer an ALA-accredited program which places a forward-thinking emphasis on the future of the field."

The revised program also culminates with a Capstone Project to give students practical work experience that can be readily applied in a multitude of work environments — from corporations, to public libraries, to government agencies, to university libraries.

The program is consistently highly ranked by U.S.News & World Report, which ranked the College in the following specialty areas: Information Systems (4th), Digital Librarianship (7th) and Services for Children and Youth (7th).

The ALA’s accreditation process is done via self-evaluation and peer review. It involves the continuous assessment and evaluation of a program and the enhancement of the program’s operations using standards. For more information, please visit ALA’s website.
