Tireless Education Advocate
Children’s Book Author and Documentary Creator

Dr. Adelman is a children’s book author and an advocate for bettering the lives of children and families through education, story and film. In addition to her books, Dr. Adelman created a documentary on addiction as well as social media to help children develop their creativity and interpersonal skills. She started her career as an elementary school teacher where she was nominated for the Disney Teacher of the Year Award multiple times. Dr. Adelman is a prominent civic activist and has worked with Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia to create community programming. She has also served as a trustee at organizations including The Franklin Institute, Simon’s Heart, Please Touch Museum, The Philadelphia School Partnership and Wissahickon Charter School.

Brian S. Alper, MD, CoM ’96

Digital Age Physician
Founder of DynaMed and Vice President of Innovations, EBSCO Health

While a medical student, Dr. Alper created DynaMed, a clinical reference tool for physicians and other health care professionals for use at the point-of-care. Today, DynaMed Plus provides a continuously updated synthesis of evidence and guidance to more than one million physicians globally and is used 20 times per minute on the web or mobile apps. Dr. Alper has facilitated commercial development of reference tools for nurses, allied health professionals and patients, and has advanced the global community with methods for guideline development (RAPADAPTE), evidence assessment (GRADE Working Group), shared decision making (Option Grid), clinical decision support (HL7), and mobilizing computable biomedical knowledge (EBMonFHIR). At Drexel, Dr. Alper serves on the Executive Advisory Board of the College of Computing & Informatics.

James Bean, BS, LeBow ’91

Former Vice President, Apple Inc.

Mr. Bean spent 20 years at Apple Inc. where he served in several senior roles including Vice President of World-Wide Sales Finance, Vice President of Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis, and finally Vice President of Retail, where he led a large global team of more than 500 employees and oversaw the operations of 486 stores in 19 countries. He is now an early stage investor in technology and healthcare companies and operates Brand Napa Valley winery which produces high-end California Cabernet blends. Mr. Bean has served on the Drexel Board of Trustees since 2015.

Ms. DeBenedictis combines a track record of excellence with fresh innovations in the rapidly growing field of KidTech. She is a Silicon Valley trailblazer who brings more than 20 years of experience with game giants Hasbro, Atari and LucasArts to her startup, Fingerprint Digital, a global mobile technology company focused on the children’s market for education and entertainment products and services. Since 2011, Fingerprint has worked with enterprise partners like Samsung, Verizon, and Highlights for Children to create mobile products that weave together learning, play and digital literacy. Fingerprint’s award-winning products have been downloaded more than 50 million times by families around the world. Ms. DeBenedictis has been hailed as one of the “Top 50 Women in Tech Dominating Silicon Valley.”

David DeCampli, BS, CoE ’80

Former Global Chief Compliance Officer, PPL

Mr. DeCampli dedicated his almost 40-year career to public utilities both at home and abroad—a career that began with a Drexel co-op at the Philadelphia Electric Company. After 12 years at PPL, Mr. DeCampli retired as the Global Chief Compliance Officer, having overall responsibility of ensuring that PPL maintained an effective enterprise-wide ethics and compliance program in an ever-evolving and increasingly complex regulatory and enforcement environment across PPL’s operating companies in the USA and United Kingdom. Previously, Mr. DeCampli served as President of PPL Energy Supply and PPL Generation, as well as President of PPL Electric Utilities Corporation. In his operating roles, he ensured that PPL’s domestic customers were reliably and cost effectively served. At Drexel, Mr. DeCampli shares his expertise as a member of the President’s Energy and the Environment Council and on the College of Engineering Dean’s Executive Advisory Council.

Richard DePiano, BS, LeBow ’64

Mr. DePiano has had an epic business career stretching over 50 years. It started with 20 years in public accounting with Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte), followed by a decade in venture capital with the Sandhurst Company, and finally 20 years as an entrepreneur with Escalon Medical Corporation, a producer of ophthalmic medical devices. Through all of this, Mr. DePiano has been a deeply loyal Drexel alumnus and has served on the Board of Trustees since 2006.

Patrick Dewar, MS, CoE ’91

International Aerospace Leader
Former Executive Vice President, Lockheed Martin International

As the first Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin International, Mr. Dewar led the global expansion of the world’s top aerospace company. Lockheed’s impressive worldwide presence marks the pinnacle of Mr. Dewar’s 34-year career with the company, where he was responsible for operations and business development in 70 countries. During his tenure, Lockheed Martin International added more than 1,000 jobs, achieved or surpassed all financial goals and exceeded market growth rates. His stature was recognized with induction as a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and membership on the Council of Foreign Relations. Mr. Dewar went on to establish The Trenton Group, LLC, a strategic investment group specializing in aerospace, defense and technology. At Drexel, Mr. Dewar serves on the President’s Leadership Council and is a member of the College of Engineering’s Alumni Circle of Distinction.

Stephen Klasko, MD, CoM ’78

Healthcare and Education Visionary
President, Thomas Jefferson University and CEO, Jefferson Health

As President of Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health since 2013, Dr. Klasko has steered one of the nation ’s fastest growing academic health institutions based on his vision of re-imagining health care and higher education. Dr. Klasko’s vision has resulted in a truly innovative 21st century institution, exemplified by the merger of Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University in 2017. Dr. Klasko’s record of success earned him #21 among Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business 2018 and tied for #2 on Modern Healthcare’s list of The Most Influential People in Healthcare. He is author of 2018’s Bless This Mess: A Picture Story of Healthcare in America, 2016’s We CAN Fix Healthcare, and 1999’s The Phantom Stethoscope. In 2019, he spoke about the future of hospitals at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Thomas A. Masci, Jr., BS, LeBow ’68

Healthcare Innovator and Veterans Advocate
Co-Founder and Former Executive Vice President & CFO, Health Advocate, Inc.

Mr. Masci combined his finance and healthcare experience to radically improve the patient experience as the Co-founder, Executive Vice President, and CFO at Health Advocate, Inc., a healthcare advocacy and assistance company. His accomplishments at the company led him to be recognized as CFO of the Year, in the medium company category, by the Philadelphia Business Journal in 2009. Mr. Masci is also a veteran who served in Korea after graduating college, and his service was celebrated with his induction into Drexel’s ROTC Hall of Fame in 2016. Mr. Masci has generously invested in Drexel in ways that reflect his personal and professional experience, creating the Masci Veterans Resource Center, Masci Tutoring in Accounting Fund, and the LeBow Commuters Learning Community Fund.

Patrick McGonigal, BS, LeBow ’86

A healthcare innovator turned angel investor, Mr. McGonigal made his mark by improving the processing of insurance payments. His 15 years of experience in finance and healthcare prepared him for success when he co-founded iHealth Technologies, a payment policy management company, in 2001. Now a private investor, Mr. McGonigal is giving back to the next generation of game-changers by generously supporting students at his alma mater. In addition to his other volunteer activities, Mr. McGonigal joined the Drexel Board of Trustees in 2018.

Barbara Moore, BS, CoE ’65

Trailblazer in Oceanography
Former Director of Undersea Research Program, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

An early leader among women in STEM, Ms. Moore broke barriers throughout her career, starting as an engineer with the U.S. Department of Defense. Her co-op experience and Drexel degree along with an advanced degree in ocean engineering ultimately led her to become the first woman Director of the Undersea Research Program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Other highlights in Ms. Moore’s career included being among the first women to go on oceanographic survey cruises and to lead several missions in Hydrolab, an underwater habitat. In addition to her scientific research, Ms. Moore managed and worked on diplomatic science agreements with Russia and China that helped open doors to these once politically closed maritime nations. She ended her career in the federal service by working with the Department of State to delineate the outer boundaries of the continental margin of the United States through underwater mapping.

Joseph Mullin, BS, CoE ’56; MBA, LeBow ’60; MS, CoE ’62

Devoted Dragon in Industry and the Classroom
Emeritus Teaching Professor, Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, Drexel University

Dr. Mullin educated and inspired Drexel engineering students for more than five decades. He was first appointed an Assistant Professor in 1961 and retired as a full Teaching Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering in 2017. He combined his passion for teaching with an active career in industry, holding leadership positions with Pennoni Associates, SCM Corporation, General Electric and S.T. Hudson Engineering, Inc. In addition to his Drexel degrees, Dr. Mullin earned his PhD from Penn State where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow. In 1992, he was honored as the Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year.

Anthony M. Noce, Esq., BS, CoE ’80

Volunteer Leader
President, AMN Development, LLC

Mr. Noce is an Attorney and Professional Engineer who currently serves as President of AMN Development LLC. He has been a tireless Drexel volunteer for 44 years. While Chair of the Drexel University Alumni Association and as a Drexel Trustee from 2015-2017, Mr. Noce was instrumental in the development and publication of the Drexel history volume and led celebrations countrywide in honor of the University’s 125th anniversary. He is also dedicated to preserving the robust tradition of Greek Life; in addition to founding the Drexel Inter-Fraternity Alumni Association, he serves as Treasurer of the Pi Kappa Phi National Fraternity Properties Board. For Mr. Noce, Drexel is a family affair; his wife Kathleen ’79 and four of his five children (Anthony ’10, Michael ’11, Emily ’16 and Alex ’20) are Dragons, as well as daughter-in-law, Caroline ’12.

Kathleen Reardon, BS, CoAS ’96

Cutting Edge Insurer
CEO, Hamilton Re

Ms. Reardon is the CEO of Hamilton Re, a property and casualty re/insurance company based in Bermuda. Her company uses data to change the way insurance is written, aiming to write risk quickly, confidently and intelligently by drawing on powerful analytics and research. Ms. Reardon first entered the insurance industry as a co-op student. Advancing to various leadership roles over the past 25 years, she began her career as an Actuarial Assistant at Cigna, advancing to Chief Underwriting Officer, International, at ACE (now Chubb) Tempest Re Bermuda before becoming Chief Underwriting Officer, Property, at Hamilton Re. Ms. Reardon is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. She is also the Co-founder and Chair of Women in Reinsurance in Bermuda and was appointed Secretary-Treasurer for the Reinsurance Association of America for the 2018 fiscal year.

Maria Renz, BS, Westphal ’90

E-Commerce Trendsetter
Vice President of Operations Customer Experience, Amazon

Ms. Renz is the Vice President of Operations Customer Experience for Amazon. She has been one of the key players who transformed Amazon.com into a shopping phenomenon of the 21st century. First joining the company in 1999, she recently served as technical advisor to CEO Jeff Bezos. She also helped launch Amazon’s free shipping policy and has led many of Amazon’s retail categories including Health & Personal Care, Beauty, Grocery, Shoes, Books, Movies & Music as well as serving as CEO to Amazon’s wholly owned subsidiary, Quidsi (diapers.com).

WIlliam Schutt, BS, LeBow ’67

Innovative Engineer and Entrepreneur
Founder, Former Owner and Chairman, MATCOR, Inc.

Mr. Schutt is the founder, former owner and Chairman of MATCOR, Inc., an engineering and manufacturing company serving the worldwide oil, gas, and infrastructure industries as well as government. Mr. Schutt holds seven US patents and several foreign patents. Recognized by the US government as one of the top experts in infrastructure corrosion, he was part of a White House delegation to the former Soviet Union. He has received numerous awards for his work and in 2016 received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Delaware Valley University. Mr. Schutt has been featured for his business and technical achievements in TIME Magazine and The New York Times, among many other publications, and has appeared as an expert commentator on radio and television. At Drexel, he serves on the External Advisory Board of the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship.

Zikria Syed, MS, CCI ’89

CEO and Co-Founder, PatientWing

With a proven record of entrepreneurial success, Mr. Syed brings synergistic solutions to the growing sector of healthcare technology. He began his career by honing his management skills for firms like Microsoft and Siemens before branching out to start Broadpeak, a clinical trial collaboration technology company. Following the sale of Broadpeak, Mr. Syed co-founded NextDocs, a global leader in providing Microsoft SharePoint-based compliance solutions to life sciences organizations. After selling NextDocs in 2015, he then co-founded PatientWing, a cloudbased platform to accelerate medical research by connecting patients and doctors to life-saving clinical trials.
