Love at the Laundromat

Finn Clements, BS Electrical Engineering ’22, Nicole Davis, BS Civil Engineering ’22

This is a story of boy meets girl, with a twist. Or perhaps in this case…a spin. This is a story of boy meets girl at the laundromat, in Myers Hall, during Freshman Welcome Week.

It was the Saturday before the start of classes and Finn Clements ’22 had to do laundry for the first time away from home. “I put it in, left and came back to a girl sitting on the table waiting for her laundry to end.”

He recalls that he confidently whipped open the washing machine door to find a wave of water cover the floor, and the girl – Nicole Davis ’22 – laughing at him from the corner.

“Over the next four hours we talked and talked while I rung out all my clothes into the garbage can and ran the dryer three times to get everything dry,” says Clements. “A month and a half later I asked Nicole to be my girlfriend and she said yes.”

Fast forward to August of 2021. Clements was ready to ask Davis to be his wife, and he wanted to incorporate the washing machine where their love story began into the engagement somehow.

Clements had the idea to reach out to the company that services the washing machines in Myers Hall. After months of dead ends, he was emailed directly by the CFO of the company who was happy to help. He mailed Clements copper wiring from inside the actual machine where the couple met, after doing repairs on it.

“I got in touch with a metal smith and jeweler who combined the copper from the machine with gold to create a custom rose gold alloy,” says Clements. “And that alloy was put on the inside band of the engagement ring.”

Everything came together on a trip to Ireland where Clements popped the question with the custom ring at the Wishing Bridge in the Gap of Dunloe. And without any hesitation, Davis said yes.

Congratulations to the happy couple who plan to get married in October 2024 in Reading, Pennsylvania.
