Graduate TV Management Program to Launch Online

The Paul F. Harron Television Management graduate program will launch a new online version of the program in fall 2015, offering a 49-credit M.S. degree designed to educate and develop forward-thinking television and new media industry leaders, with a course of study that’s designed to be convenient for working professionals. The program will be supported by the LeBow College of Business, which will allow Television Management online graduate students to take LeBow online courses for both M.S. or combined M.S./MBA programs.
The new program aims to attract people who may already be working in the television and media industries, but prefer to pursue distance learning because of professional or personal obligations. The academics focus on management for television and media organizations regardless of the content, delivery platforms or revenue models. With coursework covering management, marketing, research, finance, and legal and ethics issues, students will come to understand the media ecology of the digitally converged global media landscape. The on-campus TV Management program will soon be celebrating its 10th anniversary. Over the past seven years, the program has grown ten-fold, attracting international students from Africa, Australia, Europe, Canada, Latin America, China, India, the Middle East and the Pacific Rim, as well as Fulbright scholars from Bolivia and Ukraine. Recently, the program created a new civic engagement initiative, “Television in Service to Society,” to engage students in problem solving for not-for-profit institutions and organizations that need our TV Management expertise. Last spring, the program formalized an affiliation agreement with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), through which our students were invited to work as interns in the Ryan Seacrest Foundation Studios at CHOP.
“Drexel will be one of the first universities to launch this type of TV-focused management program online,” says TV Management program director Al Tedesco. “Our online program was created for people who have a specific interest in television, who desire to gin-up their managerial skills to match their ambitions, or undergraduates who have majored in cognate areas such as media studies, communications, film and video, and business, and who seek to develop the experience that will position them well for jobs in all segments of the television and media industries. Additionally, we think large regional media corporations like Comcast, Discovery Networks, QVC and network affiliates will see the value in a cohorted program designed to their specific requirements.”
