Emergent Making: Material Expression, Character Performance, Joshua Ben Longo
Ideas are not imposed but born of an active relational understanding between maker and material. It is an intuitive exploration where the end result is not foreseen. Artifacts emerge through a mutual relationship. This project works to translate an improvisational making process as research to inform design curriculum & as a platform to create new multi-sensory experiences. In the studio there was a making focused iterative exploration of material, form, and character, driven by curiosity and lead by improvisation. Involving studio immersion, coursework developed at MIT and Drexel in improvisation and making, and exploration of myth and ritual at many scales, this Thesis concluded with a large scale installation and performance piece in Center City Philadelphia.
