A native of Pittsburgh, Susan Scarlata has lived among the skyscrapers of Hong Kong, the fog of San Francisco, and throughout the mountains in Colorado and Wyoming. She first headed west to attend Colorado College, and has called Jackson Hole, Wyoming home for eight years. Scarlata currently works for the Town of Jackson leading community engagement and public affairs.

Previously, Scarlata worked for a number of nonprofits including schools, arts, and a foundation, and led an Arts & Leadership program for adolescent girls. She also spent a decade teaching literature and creative writing at various universities, including courses in women's studies and others highlighting texts written by women.

Scarlata holds an MFA from Brown University and a PhD from the University of Denver, and taught at both institutions and as a full Professor at the Savannah College of Art & Design in Hong Kong. Scarlata is a published author and has worked as a speechwriter, editor, and communications director. Beyond work, Scarlata edits a literary press, Lost Roads, where she founded a writing award for female poets and has published six books by women writers.
