University Assisted Schools Initiative
The University Assisted Schools (UAS) Initiative began in 2009 when Drexel University entered into an education collaborative agreement to develop a model school in West Philadelphia. The UAS Initiative is currently led by and housed in the School of Education and primarily focused on implementing a place-based strategy to improve the quality of education and academic outcomes for students in two schools within the 19104 zip code: Samuel Powel and Morton McMichael. While both schools are to remain neighborhood, non-charter public schools, the specific educational support strategies that SoE offers to help each school’s effort to create excellent academic outcomes fortheir students is different for each school.
Powel is currently a K-4 school with a population consisting of84.2% of students who are economically disadvantagedand with higher than district average reading scores. Powel is beingexpanded into a K-8 school with the middle grades having a STEM-focus.
McMichael is currently a K-8 school with a populationconsisting of95.2% of students who are economically disadvantaged, 22% special needs students, and lower than district average scores, particularly in reading. McMichael educational support strategies relates to school culture/climate, delivery of the academic curriculum, and interventions that challenge academic underperformance and other student outcomes.
The recent West Philadelphia Promise ZoneDesignation awarded by the Obama Administration in January 2014, expands the parameters of the UAS effort to include the two square mile geographic region defined by the boundaries of the Promise Zone.
