MakeSpace: Schoolwide Place-based Access to Creative Engagement

U.S. Department of Education Arts in Education Program funded to Drexel through Inflexion, Inc.

Project led by:

MakeSPACE is a 4-year, $2.5 million grant from the US Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement’s Arts in Education Dissemination Grant designed to support four rural school districts in integrating the arts across classroom learning in order to improve the motivation, engagement, creative learning skills, and arts and academic achievement of their students. The MakeSPACE project will reach that goal by increasing rural educator capacity to integrate standards-based, high-quality arts learning into core academic areas, incorporating the cultural and artistic resources in the schools’ local communities. To make space for artistic growth, creative development, and innovation, educators must see the design opportunities around them and engage in possibility thinking. To support such a shift, the MakeSPACE project will cultivate school leaders’ artistic awareness, their creative leadership, and their understanding of effective organizational learning so that educators feel supported to grow and sustain schoolwide arts integration.
