Undergraduate Education

As Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Shivanthi Anandan, PhD, works across Drexel’s schools and colleges to contribute to curricular development, uphold Drexel’s academic standards and support undergraduate student success. Undergraduate education at Drexel spans 15 Colleges and Schools with over 75 majors and a large selection of undergraduate minors.


Anandan’s research investigates how photosynthetic organisms perceive and respond to environmental signals, particularly light. She currently works on innovating devices for sustainably growing produce in the home in an eco-friendly way.

Anandan joined Drexel University in 1997 as an assistant professor in the Department of Biology. In 2013, she co-founded the URBN STEAMlab with Professor Diana Nicholas. Together they have two patents for Garden Fresh Home, an in-home hydroponic system that received funding from the National Science Foundation Innovation-Corps and the Drexel Ventures Innovation Fund. Anandan has received numerous awards for her distinguished teaching and research, including the Lindback Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching and the College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Excellence Award. She received a PhD in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
