In an era when "student" too often takes a backseat in the "student-athlete" formulation, Drexel remains committed to ensuring its players are intellectually fit.
No matter their sport, Drexel athletes continued to achieve in the academic sphere this year. In fact, the University's student-athletes graduated at a rate higher than the general student population nationwide, and even at Drexel itself. And their cumulative grade point average mirrors the Drexel student body GPA: 63 percent had a GPA above 3.0, and 100 student-athletes, or 20 percent of all varsity participants, boasted GPAs of 3.6 or higher. Oh, and there were 18 Academic All Americans as well.
The ACHIEVE Center is a key vehicle for Drexel Athletics' dedication to fostering success and development off the field (or court, or out of the water). It pairs varsity teams with academic advisors and graduate student assistants for academic mentoring. Located in the Daskalakis Athletic Center and featuring a shared study space with computing and printing technology, ACHIEVE gives student-athletes better tools to balance school and sports.
"Our students do co-op and they're in class, and then you add in the extra layer of being a student athlete, with their travel schedule and practice schedule," says Kathleen O'Brien, assistant athletic director for academics.
"If they need to come after practice, there's a professional staff member here to help them with their academic needs."
