Janani Singaravelu

Fulbright Student Scholar to India 2011-2012

Medical Science MS, 2011

Janani Singaravelu is currently completing the Master of Medical Science program at Drexel University College of Medicine. After graduating cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009, Janani received a BA in Biological Basis of Behavior and South Asia Studies. As a South Asia Studies major, she studied healthcare in South Asia and factors that affect healthcare delivery in developing countries. To complement this interest in healthcare, Janani further pursued an Honors thesis in Dr. Seema Bhatnagar's Stress Neurobiology Lab, for which she received distinction in the Biological Basis of Behavior program. Having developed keen interest in Public Health through her coursework, Janani became a student researcher at the Women’s Health Education Program at Drexel.

As her most recent achievement, Janani has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct Public Health research in India. Her interest in the spread of the HIV/TB co-infection has led her to pursue a study at a NACO sponsored clinic at Christian Medical College in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Specifically, she aims to determine whether on-time pill pick-up and patient identified factors can be used to predict disease progression, as measured by medical markers. She plans to use this experience as an introduction to medicine within the scope of Public Health.
