Diversity Dialogues Lay the Groundwork for More Collaborative and Inclusive Work Environments

Drexel University’s Office of Research & Innovation’s (ORI) Diversity & Inclusion Committee, which is comprised of 15 Dragons from various racial and ethnic backgrounds, has created and hosted a series of Diversity Dialogue webinars for faculty and professional staff to engage in ways of thinking, talking and working toward a more collaborative and inclusive work environment for Drexel researchers and professionals.

The third dialogue in the series, a Zoom session entitled “Diversity Dialogue: From Power and Privilege to Practice and Peoplehood,” will be held on Sept. 25 and focus on the intersection of power dynamics, privilege, and race, and how to reformulate existing power dynamics in ways that are informed by anti-racism, inclusion, and equity. Click here to sign up to attend the meeting.

Over the summer, two Diversity Dialogues were held and will be made available later for Drexel faculty and professional staff. The first discussion, held in July, centered on the socioeconomic effects, historical context and workplace dynamics of white privilege, and especially how these impact Black colleagues. The second discussion, held in August, focused on the importance of allyship to Black and brown people and how to work toward it in an anti-racist way. After these events, the ORI Diversity & Inclusion Committee offered a safe space for attendees to unpack the topics and conversations in more intimate settings through guided discussions within smaller groups. Over 120 Dragons attended each of these events. Additional dates and topics for subsequent Diversity Dialogues are forthcoming, and interested Dragons can email to be added to the email listserv.

The Diversity Dialogues are part of the ORI Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s mission, which is included in full below:
