According to a recent survey by a group of Drexel University environmental and architectural engineering researchers, there is quite a bit of confusion about the costs and benefits of indoor air quality improvement—even among building owners, designers, managers and tenants.

Diagnosing 'Sick' Buildings to Save Energy

Are you feeling too cold right now? Too warm? Is your office's air a little stale today? On average, Americans spend 90 percent of the day indoors, in a controlled environment. Controlling that environment, at least in the workplace, is the Sisyphean labor of building operators. “Operating” a building requires not only striking the perfect balance between heating, cooling and ventilation, but also repairing and maintaining all of the equipment and systems that allow this magical equilibrium to exist. Endlessly pushing a boulder up a hill might actually be less work. As part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, researchers from Drexel University are working on a cloud-based data analysis tool that could help consolidate these labors while also spotting undetected problems that lead to wasted energy and poor indoor environmental quality.

Green Roof Javits Center

In what is estimated to be one of the largest green retrofitting projects in U.S. history, a makeover of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is underway in New York City. The cost of the transformation is on the order of $463 million. While the effects that the green technology will have on the massive convention center and its surrounding environment are not yet known, they will, however, be closely monitored by a team of engineers from Drexel University and The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

Drexel Engineering Research Helps Generate Efficient Bioterrorism Response Plan

Dealing with the threat of bioterrorism is just one of the many issues facing emergency preparedness agencies in the post-Sept. 11 world. Researchers in Drexel University’s College of Engineering are helping to answer important questions that will shape the way responders handle bioterrorism threats in the future.  Most recently, research from Drexel’s Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering offered findings that will advise the timing of reoccupying a building where there has been a bioterrorism attack.

Engineers Apply Water Monitoring System to Preserve Filtering Membrane

Researchers in Drexel University’s Environmental Engineering Department are collaborating with American Water to apply a new test that is intended to extend the lifespan of seawater filtering membranes by predicting the growth of damaging biofilm on them. The test, called Bioluminescent Saltwater Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC), will help to measure the amount of biodegradable organic matter in seawater and enable researchers to predict the level of biological fouling –formation of biofilm- that could occur on the filtering membrane. American Water developed the AOC test, which will also help to reduce Reverse-Osmosis (RO) membrane fouling in the water desalination process.

Smart House wins NOVA Award

The Drexel Smart House has been selected by the World Green Energy Symposium (WGES) to receive a 2011 NOVA Award during the third annual symposium from October 19 – 21 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The Smart House was nominated in the Educational Case Study category for its student-led, multidisciplinary approach to developing a sustainable model for urban residential living and entrepreneurial innovation.

PA Treasury Campus Energy Efficiency Fund

State Treasurer Rob McCord unveiled at Drexel an innovative financing opportunity that will help Pennsylvania colleges and universities cut utility costs through job-creating energy efficiency improvements that will also contribute to a cleaner environment. Drexel is the first institution to participate.
