Engineers Apply Water Monitoring System to Preserve Filtering Membrane

Researchers in Drexel University’s Environmental Engineering Department are collaborating with American Water to apply a new test that is intended to extend the lifespan of seawater filtering membranes by predicting the growth of damaging biofilm on them. The test, called Bioluminescent Saltwater Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC), will help to measure the amount of biodegradable organic matter in seawater and enable researchers to predict the level of biological fouling –formation of biofilm- that could occur on the filtering membrane. American Water developed the AOC test, which will also help to reduce Reverse-Osmosis (RO) membrane fouling in the water desalination process.

Joseph Hughes Named Drexel Engineering Dean

Drexel University has named Dr. Joseph B. Hughes, the Karen and John Huff  School chair and professor of civil, environmental and materials science engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, as dean of the University’s College of Engineering. Drexel President John A. Fry has announced that Hughes will begin his tenure at Drexel on January 15, 2012.

Smart House wins NOVA Award

The Drexel Smart House has been selected by the World Green Energy Symposium (WGES) to receive a 2011 NOVA Award during the third annual symposium from October 19 – 21 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The Smart House was nominated in the Educational Case Study category for its student-led, multidisciplinary approach to developing a sustainable model for urban residential living and entrepreneurial innovation.
