Comcast Kicks Off Startup Accelerator with 10 Firms

A July 16 Inquirer story about a group of startup companies receiving funding as part of a new accelerator program from Comcast mentioned a Drexel student startup, Orai, that helps people improve their public speaking. The story was picked up on Aug. 23 by a number of outlets across the country, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Dayton Daily News.

This Bulletproof Curtain Could Protect Students From Gunmen

Drexel was mentioned in a March 9 Popular Mechanics story about a bullet-proof curtain that is being designed by Ballistic Cordon Systems, which began as a project by four recent graduates while they were at the University.

Spotlight on Smartphone App Orai

The Philadelphia Business Journal published a March 16 story about Orai, a startup cofounded by Drexel students Danish Dhamani of the College of Engineering and Paritosh Gupta of the College of Computing and Informatics. Orai, housed in the Baiada Institute for Entrepreneurship,  is a smartphone app that provides deep analysis of a user’s public speaking skills and coaches them to improve their techniques through machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Shark Tank Leads to No. 1 Spot in App Store for Local Entrepreneur

Christopher Gray, an undergraduate student in the LeBow College of Business and the Close School of Entrepreneurship, appeared in a Feb. 20 episode of ABC’s “Shark Tank” to pitch his scholarship app, Scholly. The Business Insider and Entertainment Weekly recapped his appearance on the show after the episode aired. A Feb. 23 Philadelphia Business Journal story stated that the Scholly app was ranked No. 1 on Apple’s app store in the days following the episode’s airing. Philadelphia magazine also posted a story on Feb. 23.
