Research on the Runway: Drexel Fashion Designers Team Up with Scientists for Descience Competition

Eight students and alumni from Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design are among 61 fashion designers who were chosen to participate in the first-ever Descience Fashion Competition. The national competition matches designers with scientists to create garments that reflect scientific advances. The competition will culminate with a fashion show featuring the collaborative creations at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Monday, Sept. 29.

Drexel University’s School of Education created a new, interactive mobile application for young visitors of the Barnes Foundation. Using 3-D immersive graphics, the touch-screen app, entitled “Keys to the Collection,” launches a game environment of the Barnes’ beloved, world-renowned art collection. The app turns a visit to the Barnes into a game or can be used to explore the Barnes virtually from anywhere.

Bonnie Mackay, former marketing director at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and fashion director at Bloomingdales, will join Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. for a discussion about diversity and inclusion in fashion, product design and brand development. The presentation will be held in the URBN Annex Screening Room (3401 Filbert St.). It is free and open to the public.

Green building design research expert Dr. Ajla Aksamija will join Drexel University on Thursday, Oct. 24, for a lecture entitled “Interdisciplinary Research: Building, Technology and Environment.” Head of research for the Building Technology Laboratory (Tech Lab) at international design firm Perkins+Will, Aksamija will speak about her ongoing research in high-performance buildings, building systems, innovative design approaches and emerging building technologies.

Graphic Design Students Help Solve Farming Challenges in Thailand

Graphic design alumna Krissy Beck traveled to Thailand to help design agricultural tools and techniques for Thai farmers as part of the Drexel Thai Harvest Initiative. Each year, the graphic design program chooses one student to participate in the initiative. Beck, who graduated this past June, said her initial interest in the program came from her friendship with last year's graphic designer for the team, Hannah Olin.
