Sun is a chair professor in the College of Engineering and director of both the Biofabrication Laboratory and Drexel's research center at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on computer-aided tissue engineering, solid free-form fabrication and design and modeling of nanodevices.
His group has developed multi-nozzle printers for biofabrication of tissue and bone scaffolds. He has also developed a process for 3D printing living cancer tumors from cervical cancer cells and hydrogel. Sun has commented on this subject for stories in Fast Company, LiveScience, Philadelphia magazine, and on Al Dia, and BBC.

Wei Sun, PhD, Albert Soffa chair professor in the College of Engineering, was quoted in an April 29 post on Al Dia about his research to develop a method for 3D printing cancer tumors.
How 3-D Printing Can Help To Cure Cancer
Wei Sun, PhD, Albert Soffa chair professor in the College of Engineering, was mentioned in April 28 posts on Fast Company’s FastCo Design blog, Gizmag.com and Geek.com posts about his research to develop a method for 3D printing cancer tumors.
Bioprinting Stem Cell 'Building Blocks'
Using a special designed extrusion printer he created to squeeze out a mixture of hydrogel and stem cells, Wei Sun, PhD, Albert Soffa chair professor in Drexel’s College of Engineering, is making strides toward rapid prototyping the building blocks of life. His process, which was recently published in Biofabrication gives scientists a head start at growing living three-dimensional tissues and could one day be used to create micro-organs for research purposes.
