Lough’s research focuses on earthquakes, particularly those related or connected to volcanoes. Her work encompasses seismic events related to active volcanoes and those that may be dormant, and includes a phenomenon called deep long period seismic events, which remain mysterious to the scientific community. A classically-trained geologist, Lough has made trips to Antarctica to study seismicity there beneath the glaciers.
