Basketball Tourney, Teal Tuesday Promote Domestic Violence Awareness

As part of its yearlong “See Something? Hear Something? Know Something? Say Something” campaign, the Office of Equality and Diversity is working to spread its message through a variety of ways during October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Since the Office of Equality and Diversity believes everyone plays a role in the prevention of domestic and intimate partner violence, they aimed to reach as wide an audience as possible during October.

Throughout the month, the office has headed up an informational campaign called “Teal Tuesdays.” Every Tuesday through the end of the month, members of the Office of Equality and Diversity are wearing teal, a color associated with domestic violence prevention, and hosting table hours in front of University City’s Mario the Magnificent statue around mid-day.

The Office of Equality and Diversity will also pass out ribbons on Oct. 27 to Drexel’s professional staff who have a high amount of contact with students. Colored purple, another color associated with domestic violence prevention, the ribbons are meant to show support for victims and a commitment to stopping the violence.

Finally, the Office of Equality and Diversity has been working closely with the Student Government Association along with Drexel Athletics and the Recreation Center to sponsor a three-on-three basketball tournament called #DragonsInAction, to further raise awareness.

Taking place Oct. 27 (another Tuesday), teams will square off in the Recreation Center for $500 in total prizes. Those interested can register online.

In addition to the awareness events, the Office of Equality and Diversity is launching its bystander intervention training this month.  The workshop is designed to educate members of the University community in safely intervening in incidents of sexual violence or intimate partner violence.

As a prerequisite for joining the basketball tournament, participants will also be required to take the training.

Those taking the training can email titleix@drexel.edu.
