Drexel Crew Takes Home Four Medals at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta

Director of Rowing Paul Savell advanced another record-tying five boats to the grand finals for the third straight year at the prestigious 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday, May 12 on Philadelphia's Schuylkill River. The women's novice eight and women's second varsity eight won gold medals, which marks the first gold medal victories ever for the women's program. The men's novice eight captured a silver medal for the third straight year, while the men's varsity eight took home a bronze medal in the finals. Overall, the Drexel Crew placed second with 35 total points, while Purdue took first with 37 points. The fourth-seeded men's varsity eight, in the newly named Louis Krall boat, posted the top time in the semi-finals with a time of 6:00.401 that automatically landed the Dragons a spot in the finals. Temple placed second with a time of 6:02.522. The men's varsity eight shell consisted of coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Kurt Linton, Paul Wisniowski, Aleksandar Radovic, Lorenzo Albala, Sebastian Ryan, Vanja Busic, Michael Faust and bow Will Masters. In the finals, the Dragons faced strong competition, but used their speed to cross the finish line third with a time of 6:02.401 for a bronze medal. Michigan University stopped the clock first with a time of 5:58.604 for the Richard O'Brien Trophy. Florida Institute of Technology won silver. The fourth seeded men's second varsity eight, in the Annette Pennoni boat, crossed the finish line second behind Michigan University with a time of 6:04.908. Michigan earned first place with a time of 5:58.109. In the finals, coxswain Marc Smith, stroke John Pieper, Marcus DeMarici, Martin Khait, Brian Timlin, Kevin Rorabaugh, Ryan Mallgrave, Timothy Drake and bow Patrick McGann finished fourth overall. Michigan University won gold with a time of 6:07.151, while Grand Valley earned a silver medal. The top-ranked men's novice eight, in the Peggy Greenawalt boat, took first place in the semi-finals with a time of 6:05.764, which locked a spot in the finals. Purdue placed second with a time of 6:09.423. In the finals, coxswain Victoria Kenion, stroke Dean Hill, Brian McCabe, Hartman Byers, Jake Murphy, Christian Ladd, Casimir Czworkowski, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Cameron Staines crossed the finish line second with a time of 6:05.660 for a silver medal. Marietta recorded the fastest time of 6:05.660 for the Lev Brett Bowl. The men's team had two boats compete in the semi-finals, but did not move on to the finals. The men's novice four, in the Tobey and Kim Oxholm boat, took fourth place in the semi-finals with a time of 6:54.21. The boat consisted of coxswain Diana Fox, stroke David Gockley, Mahmoud Shurbaji, James Byrne and bow Matt Gehret. Adam Cordi and Pete Eyrich, in the Katherine M.L. Buckley boat, took third place with a time of 7:15.009 in the men's pair semi-finals. The ninth-ranked women's varsity eight, in the Marlene Buckley II boat, placed third in the semi-finals with a time of 6:49.635. Miami took first place with a time of 6:40.975 followed by Bucknell at 6:43.340. In the petite finals, coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Julia Jackson, Elizabeth Daugherty, Mollie Cusack, Samantha Cowan, Elizabeth Bratton, Emily Coyle, Sierra Baca and bow Alexa Antonioli clocked in a top time of 6:55.857. Dayton posted second place followed by Old Dominion, Temple, Saint Joseph's and Delaware respectively. The third-ranked women's second varsity eight, in the Maria Papadakis boat, automatically advanced to the finals after placing second in the qualifying heat. Drexel won a gold medal along with the Coleman D. Boylan Trophy after a dominating performance with a time of 7:11.124. The winning boat featured coxswain Kerry Walsh, stroke Jackie Bender, Elizabeth Campanella, Juliana DeMarici, Mallory Sykes, Amanda O'Malley, Alyssa Leahy, Asiya Mahmud and bow Colleen Delaney. Bucknell took home a silver medal, while Saint Joseph's earned a bronze. The top-ranked women's novice eight, in the Marlene Buckley boat, finished behind Lehigh for second place with a time of 7:01.931 in the semi-finals. Lehigh grabbed first place with a time of 6:57.890. In the finals, coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Meredith Bracken, Emily Gartland, Olivia Babiec, Bridget Pfeifer, Amanda Kleuser, Joy Yingling, Jayme Batcher and bow Elise Levito crossed the finish line first earning a gold medal with a time of 7:04.592. Lehigh clocked in at 7:09.834 for second-place followed by Purdue. The women's novice four, in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, earned third place in the semi-finals with a time of 7:43.650 and did not advance to the finals. The boat featured coxswains Caitlin Meehan, stroke Amanda Dargay, Elise Panacek, Jillian Skovran and bow Kathy Cheng.
