Student-Conference-Explores-Relationships-to-Food

Drexel University’s Office of International Programs will host a daylong conference on March 2 on the global food crises and diverse and complex relationships to food.

Six student panels will tackle the central theme of food from various different interdisciplinary perspectives. The conference will bring together students and community groups, faculty, staff and alumni to address a wide range of issues related to the topic of food.

“Access to healthy food is essential to public health and the development of local communities and global security.” said Julie Mostov, vice provost for Global Initiatives at Drexel. “Our relationship with food is a driver of policy, the economy and conflict or cooperation in international relations. The conference gives students a chance to address these global challenges together and to use the knowledge that they have gained in the classroom and through their research.”

The event will feature Dr. Marion Nestle, a consumer activist, nutritionist, award-winning author and academic, who specializes in the politics of food and dietary choice. Nestle has served as a senior nutrition policy advisor in the Department of Health and Human Services and as a member of the FDA Food Advisory Committee and Science Board.  TIME magazine named her Twitter account (@marionnestle) as one of the top 140 most influential and one of the top 10 in health and science.

The conference will also feature student panels focusing on food from various different global perspectives: including mass media, business, technology, health, and human rights.
