What: ITWorks, a new job training program for disadvantaged young adults that also places graduates into internships in Philadelphia’s nonprofit, business and public sectors, will graduate its first class on Feb. 2. The first 10 weeks of the program were held at Drexel University and hosted by Goodwin College’s School of Education through the Center for the Prevention of School-Aged Violence. Drexel is the first university in Greater Philadelphia to host the program. ITWorks offers a free, 16-week, immersive Information Technology (IT) training program to disadvantaged youth. It’s a collaboration between the United Way of Southeastern PA, Drexel University, and NPower PA, a unique nonprofit that provides hands-on technology services to over 350 nonprofit organizations in Greater Philadelphia. Students are currently interning at local corporations such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Reed Technology and Information Services, and Brandywine Realty Trust and local nonprofits such as The Philadelphia Horticultural Society.Who: Twelve students will graduate during the ceremony. Councilman Bill Green, vice chair of Technology and Information Services for the City will attend. Drexel Provost Dr. Mark Greenberg, Dr. William Lynch, dean of Goodwin College, and Dr. Charles Williams, director of Goodwin’s Center for the Prevention of School-Aged Violence and chairman of the ITWorks Advisory Board, will be among those congratulating the graduates.When: Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at 11 a.m.Where: Drexel’s William Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D.
