What: Drexel student engineers have been busy building the team’s soap box vehicle to compete in the Red Bull Soap Box Derby in Manayunk this Saturday. Drexel’s team and 40 others will each line up their hand-crafted creative human-powered driving machines to race against the clock in a downhill dash to the finish line.Who: Members of Drexel’s student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers built the University’s vehicle. Four students, Raymond Brown, Jonathan Mahler, Chris Muenker and Pat Sweeney, will race the dragon-shaped vehicle. The team qualified late for the competition and was given three weeks notice to participate. With the clock working against them, the students used one week to design the vehicle, one to build it and one to decorate and test it.Visuals: The dragon-shaped vehicle inspired by Drexel’s dragon mascot with gold wings attached to each of the vehicle’s sides… the vehicles of 40 competitors racing… the cheers from the crowds at the finish line. When: Saturday, September 6, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. rain or shine (Award ceremonies will be held at 3:30 p.m.)Where: “The Wall” at Manayunk or on Levering Street and Lyceum Avenue between Cresson and Pechin St reets. Background: For more information, visit www.redbullsoapboxusa.com.News Media Contact: Niki Gianakaris, Assistant Director, Drexel News Bureau 215-895-6741, 215-778-7752 (cell) or ngianakaris@drexel.edu
