Pakistan’s 20th Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, a central player in the constitutional crisis that erupted last year in his country, will speak with faculty and students at a reception at 4 p.m. Nov. 20 at Drexel University’s Earle Mack School of Law (3320 Market Street). After the reception, Chaudhry will speak at a public forum co-sponsored by Drexel Law, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Penn Law National Lawyers Guild, Penn Law Dean's Speakers Fund, the Pakistan Justice Coalition and the South Asian Center of the University of Pennsylvania. The chief justice will talk about the rule of law in Pakistan, which was rocked by legal and political turmoil after former President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency and suspended his country’s constitution in 2007. At the time, Musharraf said Pakistan’s Supreme Court had allowed terrorists to go free, but critics noted that Justice Chaudhry’s removal from the bench followed rulings opposing privatizing steel mills and accepting the cases of Musharraf’s political opponents, such as former Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. Musharraf’s actions sparked a movement among Pakistan’s lawyers, who continue to demand the reinstatement of Justice Chaudhry. Drexel Law Associate Professor Anil Kalhan will introduce Justice Chaudhry at the forum, which will be held at 6 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania Law School (3400 Chestnut Street). Professor Kalhan received a special award from the South Asian Journalists Association in June for coverage of the crisis that appeared in Asia Media News Daily and in "Dorf on Law," a legal blog.
