Hosting the democratic presidential candidates debate at Drexel, will officially launch the Drexel Votes 2008 Task Force. Drexel students, faculty and staff formed the coalition in an effort to educate students on how to become engaged citizens in a democratic society. Spearheaded by Dr. Mark Greenberg, dean of Drexel’s Pennoni Honor’s College, and Dr. Jane Bryan, director of Drexel Libraries, the Task Force’s main goal is to address the continuing challenge of low turnout among voters 18 to 24 years of age, and to encourage students to vote in the next presidential election. The Task Force’s first goal was to create a Web site where Drexel students can find comprehensive information that will help them develop the skills they need to critically assess and evaluate political information. The Web site includes information on how to register for first-time voters, links to the official sites of the Democratic and Republican parties and a briefing on independent and third party voters. One of the highlights of the Drexel Votes 2008 program is the University’s “Great Works Symposium” for 2008-09 that will focus on the strengths and weaknesses and special challenges of democracy as a system of government.“Drexel Votes 2008 is an initiative that will utilize the resources of the entire University,” said Greenberg. “The goal of Drexel Votes 2008 is to attune our students to the critical issues of the next election, get them involved in the political process and get them to vote.”Drexel will offer courses and guest lectures and other events to help students become engaged in the U.S. political system and increase their voting turnout, Greenberg said.
