Drexel University, a 116-year-old Philadelphia institution renowned for its leadership in higher education innovation, is exploring the possibility of establishing a four-year private university in Placer County, Calif., outside Sacramento, as reported in the Aug. 5 Sacramento Bee.Drexel President Constantine Papadakis recently met with Placer County community leaders and toured an 1,100-acre tract west of Roseville where a 600-acre university is proposed. The university would sell 500 acres to private developers to help finance construction of the university.The land for the university would be donated by the Tsakopoulos family, William and Claudia Cummings, Wayne and Mary Prim and their partners. Angelo Tsakopoulos is a prominent real estate developer and the founder and owner of Sacramento-based AKT Development.The plan for the new university is before the Placer County Planning Commission.“The opportunity to help create a university in Greater Sacramento — one of the fastest-growing areas in the country — is extraordinary,” Papadakis said. “We continually look for ways to expand the outreach of our unique brand of higher education.”Julie Hanson, the KT Communities project manager for the proposed university, said the community was honored to host Papadakis on his visit to Placer County.“In his tenure at Drexel, Dr. Papadakis has brought dynamic leadership and vision to the institution,” Hanson said. “He has doubled full-time undergraduate enrollment, increased freshmen applications from 3,500 to 21,500 and increased the University’s endowment from $90 million to $640 million.”About Drexel University: Founded in 1891, Drexel University is a private, comprehensive, doctoral research university widely recognized for its focus on co-operative education and technology.
