As director of the medical simulation laboratory and a professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology, Dr. Griswold-Theodorson has the privilege of working within this simulation-supportive institution that has allowed us to bring together a fabulous cadre of educators to develop the Master of Science in Medical and Healthcare Simulation (MSMS) program.

The group is thrilled to have the opportunity to formalize simulation education into this novel degree program. Dr. Griswold-Theodorson has been teaching via simulation-based education for the last 12 years, wearing many hats over that time. She currently serves as the chief of the Simulation Division of the Department of Emergency Medicine. She works closely with the faculty, residents and medical students to provide simulated experiences through simulation of high risk, low frequency clinical situations.

Dr. Griswold-Theodorson completed a master's in public health in May 2010 with the specific intention to use the knowledge gained to improve her research and publication skills to further advance the science of simulation as a means to improve patient safety. She is currently actively working with the Simulation Academy, CORD and CDEM to build teaching cases that can be used for simulation education or oral board practice. She is hopeful that these cases will also serve as a bridge to aid in milestone evaluation in the transition to the next accreditation system.

As a previous program director of an emergency medicine residency program, Dr. Griswold-Theodorson was fortunate to have participated in the evolution of GME from a curriculum-driven format to the outcomes-based assessment model these programs currently strive to attain. She hopes to play an integral role in the morphology of graduate medical education from the current apprenticeship model into an educational model that incorporates evidenced-based simulated clinical experiences as a standard and vital component.

It is intuitive that simulated clinical experiences will improve patient outcomes in the future by supplementing traditional medical education with simulated educational that allows healthcare providers the opportunity to practice to a mastery level before providing patient care. Hairdressers, pilots, military personnel and other high-reliability organizations practice on mannequins and with simulators; why isn’t it a mainstay practice in healthcare?


Dr. Griswold-Theodorson's interests are focused on how the implementation of simulated clinical experiences can improve heathcare education methodology, clinical patient outcomes and patient safety. The challenge is to prove the utility of simulation to the rest of the world through collaboration, quality scientific evidence and cost effectiveness studies. Her hope is that graduates of the MSMS program will become the next generation of outstanding simulation educators, researchers and leaders.
