Dimitrios Papanagnou, MD, MPH, is on the faculty at the New York City Institute for Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning (IMSAL). He is a board-certified emergency medicine physician who holds academic appointments as clinical assistant professor at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Medical Center in Brooklyn. His responsibilities at IMSAL include course development, instruction and facilitation for facilities across the entire Health and Hospitals Corporation.

Dr. Papanagnou graduated from the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine. As a Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation Scholar, he received a Masters of Public Health at Columbia University's Mailman School. He went on to complete his residency in emergency medicine at the NYU/Bellevue Hospital Center.

After residency, Dr. Papanagnou completed a fellowship in emergency ultrasonography at SUNY Downstate/Kings County Hospital. His research interests in ultrasound include echocardiography and pulmonary imaging. He has traveled to India, Brazil, Romania, and El Salvador to teach physicians point-of-care, bedside ultrasonography.

In 2010, Dr. Papanagnou was appointed director of medical simulation at SUNY Downstate, where he supports and develops educational simulation programs for the medical center. His simulation interests include multidisciplinary team-based learning, simulation-integrated curriculum development, and simulation-assisted ultrasound education.

To build on his skills in medical education and healthcare simulation, Dr. Papanagnou is currently working on a doctorate in adult education (EdD) at Teachers College, Columbia University’s Graduate School of Education. Most recently, he was selected as a fellow for the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program, a patient-safety initiative sponsored by the United Hospital Fund (UHF) and the Greater New York Hospital Association. He feels both these programs will enrich the coursework offered at SUNY Downstate and IMSAL.
