Liang Oscar Qiang, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Research Interests

Neurological disease modeling and potential therapies using iPSC-derived neurons, as well as other cellular reprogramming strategies


Dr. Qiang completed his MD and MS at Nantong University in 2000 and 2003, respectively, and his PhD at Drexel in 2009. His dissertation was "Functional Analyses of Microtubule Severing Proteins in the Central Nervous System." He then did postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Asa Abeliovich at Columbia University Medical Center, where he studied pathological mechanisms and potential therapeutic approaches Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

In 2013 he became a principal scientist at Angriocrine Bioscience, where he investigated the blood brain barrier in vitro, in an effort to support drug screening for the central nervous system. He also explored the microvasculature platform/niche to expand and differentiate embryonic and adult neural progenitor cells for therapeutic application, and generated CNS-derived microvasculature environment to support neuronal reprogramming.

The Qiang Laboratory Overview and Interests

The Qiang Laboratory concentrates on using human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) based technologies to establish in vitro (distinct phenotypical CNS neuronal cultures) and ex vivo (3d forebrain and midbrain organoids, aka “mini-brains”) cellular and tissue models to study various neurodegenerative disorders including Tauopathies (including Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s disease and Frontotemporal Dementia), Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) and Gulf War Illness (GWI). The ultimate goal of our mission is to elucidate the etiology and causative mechanisms underlie those disorders and to uncover novel molecular targets for treatment therapies.
