The Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship program trains dedicated physicians from any qualifying specialty, empowering them to become leaders in the field of hospice and palliative medicine.

Our focus is on the clinical and educational disciplines within palliative care. Graduating fellows will not only be expert clinicians, but will help train the next generation of hospice and palliative medicine physicians. In addition, fellows receive specialized training in administration and research within palliative care.

Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship Curriculum

The Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship program is a 12-month fellowship per ACGME guidelines and focuses on the clinical aspects of the discipline. Our fellowship features a balanced approach to the practice of inpatient and outpatient hospice, and inpatient and outpatient palliative care. This balanced curriculum gives equal weight and exposure to the full spectrum of hospice and palliative medicine to prepare the fellow for many roles after graduation.

There are three main elements to the fellowship curriculum:

  1. Hospice
  2. Palliative care inpatient consultation service
  3. Outpatient palliative medicine clinic

There are also rotations through relevant disciplines including pain medicine, oncology, and congestive heart failure. In addition to the clinical framework, there is a mandatory research project, which can take the form of grant proposals, manuscripts for publication, CQI, or clinical research projects. All projects will be supervised by a Drexel Medicine clinical faculty mentor. Didactics are held once a week.

Finally, there is an opportunity for integrated and longitudinal experience where the fellow will learn to teach residents and students about hospice and palliative medicine. During their rotations, they will often have a resident or student learning from them in the clinical setting.
