Global Health Education Student Experiences Debi Smith

This past summer I worked as a summer fellow for NIH and had the opportunity to travel to Zambia to help launch their study in detecting cervical pre-cancer in low-resource settings. The goal of the study was to collect data for training an algorithm, allowing the use of artificial intelligence in detecting cervical pre-cancer and cancer. I was sent to Zambia prior to the launch of the study as a corespondent to understand and gather information on Zambia’s current screening program to ensure a smooth integration of the study into their current system. My research was primarily field work; I participated in site visits to numerous hospitals and clinics in Lusaka, and interviewed various health care providers and administrators to better understand their health care systems and current screening process for HPV and cervical cancer.
