Himalayan Health Exchange: Spiti Valley
Summer 2015

"I spent about 20 days between my first and second year in a remote region called Spiti Valley in the Himalayas. It took three days of travel across rugged terrain to reach our destination, which was located at the Indo-Tibetan border at about 11,000 feet.

"We rotated between nine clinic sites, treating Tibetan settlers, Buddhist monks and nuns, the Indian border army, and many children. Since the roads to Spiti Valley are closed for six months out of the year, we were the only medical care for a majority of the population. Makeshift clinic sites were set up where we had four students to each attending.

"Not only was my experience a great way for me to learn about medicine, but it provided an opportunity to learn about the culture and religion in the Himalayas. We visited many historical sites including monasteries and the second highest permanent settlement in the world. Part of the trip was spent camping and we also had plenty of opportunities to hike. Overall, it was one of the most rewarding and life-changing experiences of my life, and I would highly recommend this trip for students looking for adventure."
