  • New Jersey July Bar Exam Rescheduled

The New Jersey July Bar examination will be administered on September 9 and 10. Registration is now open.

The New Jersey Supreme Court and the Board of Bar Examiners recently announced that, due to the ongoing public health emergency arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Jersey July Bar examination will be administered in Fall 2020, specifically, on September 9 and 10. Accordingly, registration for the Fall 2020 bar examination is now open.

If New Jersey is not an option, there are more than 30 other UBE jurisdictions. However, be sure to confirm with that jurisdiction that you can transfer your score to New York BEFORE applying.  Also, the application deadlines vary by jurisdiction. It is your responsibility to confirm that you can still register.

  • New York Bar Exam: September Exam Open to In-state Law Students Only

The NY Board of Law Examiners announced that only in-state law students will be permitted to apply to sit the September exam during an initial application period of May 5-15, 2020.

On April 30, 2020, the NY Board of Law Examiners (NYBOLE) announced that only in-state law students will be permitted to apply to sit the September exam during an initial application period of May 5-15, 2020. After May 15, NYBOLE will reassess available seating “to a larger pool of candidates.”

However, the extent of NYBOLE’s capacity to accommodate further candidates is currently unknown, and it has not been announced whether a subsequent larger pool of candidates, if considered, will be subject to further prioritization criteria.

Note: Those seeking admission in NEW YORK by UBE transfer will still have to satisfy all other NY requirements, including but not limited to the MPRE, Pro Bono Requirement, New York Law Course and New York Law Exam. Information on how to transfer a UBE score into NY is available here.

Due to limited seating capacity, the NYBOLE is “strongly encouraging” out-of-state candidates to consider sitting for the UBE at a later date or in other jurisdictions.
