  • Additional Courses Added to Summer

    Due to student demand, we have added two new courses to Summer: Conflict of Laws and an additional section of Contract Drafting.

    Due to student demand, we have added two new courses to Summer:

    • Conflict of Laws with Dean Oates. Conflict of Laws will meet synchronously online on Tuesday evenings, 6-8:30 p.m. EDT. It is available for registration now, CRN 40609.
    • An additional section of Contract Drafting with Professor Dilgard-Clark. This second section of Contract Drafting will meet 12-1 p.m. EDT on Mondays. Once this is scheduled, we will contact students on the existing waitlist first and then open it to registration.

  • Moot Court Board Releases Timeline for Internal Competition

    For students interested in competing in this year’s tryout to join the Moot Court Board, here is the timeline of this year’s internal competition.

    For students interested in competing in this year’s tryout to join the Moot Court Board, here is the timeline of this year’s internal competition:

    Firstly, students must request an anonymous Moot Court ID from Arianna Moriniere-Wilson. To do so, students must email Arianna.n.Moriniere-Wilson@drexel.edu with their name, email, phone number, and rising class (AJDs are rising 3Ls). The deadline to receive an anonymous ID is May 15, 2020 at 5 p.m.

    On May 21, the Moot Court Board will release the problem for this year’s competition. Materials for this year’s competition will include a fact pattern, a batch of sources, and a shell brief. The shell brief will include a cover page, the question(s) presented, and a statement of the facts. Competitors will only be required to write the summary of the argument and the argument sections. Like in year’s past, this year’s competition will be a CLOSED UNIVERSE. That is, the Moot Court Board will be providing the competitors with the legal materials that they will be relying on for the competition. The problem will be released on the “2020 Moot Court Internal Competition” TWEN page.

    Shortly after the problem’s release, Veronica Finkelstein will host a presentation that is tailored to this year’s problem. She will give a brief overview of the relevant law, discuss brief writing tips, and provide advice on preparing for oral argument. Additional details regarding this presentation will be provided closer to the release date of this year’s problem.

    Briefs will be due on June 28, 2020 at 5 p.m. Competitors will submit their briefs, using their anonymous ID, on the 2020 Moot Court Internal Competition TWEN page.

    On July 3, 2020, competitors’ briefs will be posted. These briefs will be posted to help competitors prepare for oral argument.

    On July 18-19, 2020, the preliminary round of oral arguments will be held at the law school building. At the preliminary round, students perform oral argument twice, once “on-brief” and once “off brief.” That is, students will be expected to argue for the side for which they wrote the brief, and against it as well.

    The quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds of oral argument for the internal competition will be held during the orientation week for the Class of 2023.

    Lastly, if you have any additional questions before the problem is released, please feel free to contact any member of the Executive Board. However, if you have any questions after the problem is released, please direct those questions directly to Member Liaison, Maria Isabella Cazacu (mic33@drexel.edu). To preserve anonymity, she will serve as the point of contact between competitors and the Executive Board.

  • New Jersey July 2020 Bar Examination Postponed Until Fall 2020

    The Supreme Court and the Board of Bar Examiners announced that the New Jersey bar examination will not be administered on July 28 and July 29, 2020 as previously scheduled. The bar examination has been postponed until the Fall.

    The Supreme Court and the Board of Bar Examiners announced on April 6 that, due to the ongoing public health emergency arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Jersey bar examination will not be administered on July 28 and July 29, 2020 as previously scheduled. The bar examination has been postponed until the Fall.

    If you already submitted your complete July 2020 bar examination application, you do not need to take any further action. If you already began your application for the July 2020 examination, you may continue completing your application. The NJ BOLE will be updating their website to notify you regarding extended deadlines.

    The Board of Bar Examiners, in consultation with the Supreme Court, will continue to closely monitor public health and safety guidelines, including prohibitions against large gatherings, related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the event that limitations on large gatherings continue to interfere with a Fall administration of the New Jersey bar examination, alternative means for testing of applicants for New Jersey bar admission will be devised and announced.

  • Andy and Gwen Stern Community Lawyering Clinic Seeks Summer Volunteers

    Deadline: April 30, 2020

    Earn up to 50 pro bono hours volunteering with the Stern CLC this summer. Students will work on a variety of legal issues such as employment discrimination, housing, property ownership, and postconviction matters.

    The Andy and Gwen Stern Community Lawyering Clinic (Stern CLC), which is directed by Professor Rachel López, is seeking students to volunteer at the Clinic this Summer (2020). The students will be working with the Clinic’s Staff Attorney, Rodlena Sales to offer legal services to the West Philadelphia community and can use their volunteer hours toward their pro bono service requirements. Students can earn a maximum of 50 pro bono hours. 

    The students will engage in community outreach and provide legal assistance and advice to individuals from the communities around Drexel’s campus. The students will work on a variety of legal issues such as employment discrimination, housing (i.e. eviction), property ownership (i.e. tangled titles, property taxes), and postconviction matters. In addition, the students will have the opportunity to work with community organizations on zoning issues. 

    The Stern CLC is housed in the Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships, which is situated at the border of Mantua and Powelton Village, two neighborhoods that are in close proximity to the Law School and University’s campus.

  • Drexel Counseling Center Offers Services Online

    Drexel University’s Counseling Center offers online services, including teletherapy and peer support.

    Teletherapy Sessions

    The Counseling Center is offering Teletherapy services via HIPAA-compliant Zoom (video chat) with an emphasis on addressing a student’s immediate concerns, problem-solving, and symptom management. In cases where a student may not be able to connect via Zoom, telephone sessions will be offered as an alternative. While there are some limitations for students who are currently residing outside of Pennsylvania or New Jersey, any student can connect with a therapist and discuss how we can best support you.

    Coping Skills, Mental Health Modules, and More

    Visit our website for informational materials to help guide you in coping with some of the mental health challenges that you may be experiencing due to COVID-19, as well as general mental health issues. We will continue adding these materials to our website for students to access on an on-going basis, so keep checking in.

    Helpful Online Resources

    We have compiled a list of online resources that we think could be helpful for students in maintaining good mental health while staying at home. You can find this list on our website and we will be updating it periodically. This list includes many free online resources as well as Drexel resources that are now available remotely.

    Coming Soon: Virtual Groups

    Over the Spring Quarter the Counseling Center will be offering virtual groups via Zoom for students to connect, share, and get support with therapist facilitation. While these groups are not equal to mental health treatment, we hope that they will provide an opportunity for students to feel connected and supported during a difficult time.     We know that life gets hard, and sometimes you can feel that you're not being heard by those around you. That is why the Office of Counseling and Health Services has brought 7 Cups to Drexel. 7 Cups is an online service that connects its users with caring listeners who help provide emotional support for non-crisis issues, along with other functions such as guides on maintaining mental wellness.     State clerkships are an excellent way to launch your legal career.

    Gain insight into the day to day work of clerking, pick up practical application tips and learn about the timeline for a successful clerkship search. Most legal employers are looking for candidates with 1-2 years of experience—they love hiring clerks. 

    • 2Ls: Some judges (NJ in particular) hire early in the spring and summer which allows you to go into 3L year with a job in place. 
    • 3Ls: There are still clerkship opportunities for the 2020-2021 term.

    Ambassadors will work with the Admissions Office throughout the academic year to help recruit and yield an engaged, talented and diverse student body.

    The Admissions Office is looking to hire a new cohort of Law School Ambassadors.

    The purpose of the Law School Ambassador (LSA) program is to extend and strengthen the Kline School of Law’s reach via the efforts of knowledgeable law students through both on- and off-campus events. Ambassadors will work with the Admissions Office throughout the academic year to help recruit and yield an engaged, talented and diverse student body.

    Compensation

    LSAs are awarded a $2,000 stipend per academic year. Must complete assigned duties and remain in Good Academic Standing.
